New Ulm is a city in Brown County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 13,594 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Brown
County. It is famous for a statue of Herman the German. The city was founded in 1854 by German immigrants. Its name is derived from Neu-Ulm in the German state of Bavaria. In part due to the city's German heritage, it is a center for brewing in the Upper Midwest, home to many microbreweries, though its brewing culture is dominated by the historic, storied August Schell Brewing Company (the second largest brewery in the state, behind Gluek Brewing Company and immediately ahead of Summit Brewing Company). The city is home to Martin Luther College. Flandrau State Park is adjacent to the city.
